Where to visit in and around Leyburn
The Shawl
Accessed from the Market Place, the Shawl is an escarpment offering sensational views across Wensleydale towards Penhill (above) and some of the higher Coverdale fells
Legend has it that Mary Queen of Scots dropped her shawl while fleeing for her life from nearby Bolton Castle. Whatever the truth, the Shawl is little changed since the Elizabethan era. The five-mile circular walk, taking in the villages of Preston under Scar and Wensley is one of the finest shorter walks you will find anywhere in England.

Penhill
Whichever way you approach Leyburn, Penhill is the majestic landmark you see on the horizon.
Penhill offers a walk of about two and half hours. Drive to West Witton and take the first left turn. You can usually park next to the gallops which you will reach after about two miles. Proceed on foot up the hill until you reach a stile on the right. From there the route to the summit is easy to find. Walk along the hill until you reach a track that leads you down the hill, across fields and finally back to where you parked your car. A lovely short circular walk.
