Leyburn Shawl is an escarpment that provides spectacular views of Wensleydale towards Penhill. Legend has it that Mary Queen of Scots, while imprisoned at nearby Bolton Castle, escaped and fled towards Leyburn but dropped her shawl and was discovered by pursuing soldiers.
